© DenLorsTools.com Summary: Specialty tools for diesels are not as easy to find as tools for cars. OTC is changing that. A recent tool introduction that will assist in checking hard starts in Ford 6.0 diesels is now available.

Basically the hard start or no start condition can occur if the IPR which stands for “Injector Pulse Regulator” doesn’t hold pressure. Think about it as a check valve. The pressure should stay UP to allow for a quick start on demand. Below are some of the vehicles which may be affected.

2005 Ford E-450 Econoline 6.0 L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8
2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty King Ranch 6.0L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8
2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty 6.0 L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8
2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty Lariat 6.0L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8

2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty XL 6.0L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8
2006 Ford F-250 Super Duty Lariat 6.0 L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8
2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty XLT 6.0L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8
2006 Ford F-250 Super Duty XLT 6.0 L, DIESEL, Vin P, Turbo, Eng Cfg V8

Top Causes of a Hard Start with the 6.0 Ford Diesel
1. Injector Pressure Regulator (IPR)
2. Snap To Connect (STC) Fitting – Refer to TSB 08-18-6 for information on most 2005-2007 6.0 Power Stroke Diesel Trucks.
3. Injection Control Pressure (ICP) Pump
4. Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

Since the engine has to have proper oil pressure to start, make sure there are no leaks and the level is full. The ICP (Injection Control Pressure) sensor located from the passenger side valve cover can be accessed and shop air applied to it. After air pressure is applied, the ignition can be turned on and the OTC 6764 used to close the IPR. With the IPR closed, no air (or very little) should heard in the crankcase. There are other tests and procedures to consider, refer to a service manual for these other tests. The OTC6764 will make troubleshooting hard start problems a little easier – one more arsenal in the tool box!
