Power Steering Diagnostic Guide
1. Engine idling valve open note flow & pressure above 150 PSI/1034 KPA check for flow restrictions
2. Engine idling partially close valve to build 700 PSI/4827 KPA
· Flow drops more than 1 GPM/3.8LPM repair ring rotor & vanes
· Flow below spec & not affected by pressure increase replace union fitting (pump)
3. Engine idling close and open valve 3 times and note pressure each time valve is closed
· Pressure varies more than 50 PSI/345 KPA clean flow control valve
· Pressure 100 PSI/690 KPA less than spec replace flow control valve
4. Vary engine speed from idle to approx 1,500 RPM & note flow
· Flow varies more than 1 GPM/8 LPM from step 1 clean flow control valve
5. Engine idling turn wheels against stops each way & note flow
· Flow more than 1 GPM/3.8 LPM remove gear disassemble & repair
6. Engine idling turn steering wheel slightly in both directions & release quickly
· Pressure increases 200-400 PSI/1379-2758 KPA but does not snap back remove disassemble & clean rotary valve (Gear)
7. If checks made in steps 1 thru 6 are ok but problems still exists shot off engine and
· Remove pitman arm from gear and proceed to next step
8. Engine idling turn steering wheel in both directions (Not against stops) & note pressure
· Pressure below 150 PSI/1034 KPA check suspension for binding
Pressure above 150 PSI/1034 KPA remove gear & repair
