Jeep Grand Cherokee Interior Door Handle Broken – Recall?

10:15 am Automotive Consumer, Extended Warranty, How To Auto Repair, Jeep, Public Service

© DenLorsTools.com Summary: A disturbing number of Jeep Grand Cherokee interior door handles are breaking at an alarming rate. Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2005 and up seem to have a particularly weak point in the interior door panel where the interior door handle is located. See what Jeep owners are doing about this problem and learn about the latest replacement parts information. A recall was thought to be eminent.

IMPORTANT – Since this article was originally posted, we now have a solution for most affected Jeep Grand Cherokees. Fix ALL FOUR Jeep Handles at a reasonable price. See our product PN ZT100DLT

Almost $2,000 in rubble from 4 door panels off a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

No recall in sight – however an aftermarket (Zach Thrasher) fix has solved the issue.

The weak design in the interior door panels on Jeep Grand Cherokees and Commanders is one of the latest disappointments from Jeep. Many of our readers are irate over the weak design in Jeep Liberty power windows – see the related repair article at the end of this post. What makes matters worse (with Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commanders) is that the interior door handles, at this time, are not serviceable by themselves - the ENTIRE interior door panel has to be replaced. Surely due to high demand for a better fix, an aftermarket company will start manufacturing a stronger replacement that can be attached to the existing door panel. For now though, the whole assembly has to be replaced due to the design. The interior door handle is plastic welded into the door panel – NOT attached with screws. Most interior door handles are serviceable by themselves which makes the repair much less expensive. When the Jeep dealer was contacted for replacement interior door handles, we were told that there is no recall and they are not available by themselves.

Retainers are included with the new panels, but wiring & modules have to be transferred.

One out of the four door panels had a new power window switch included. All others had to have the switches transferred over along with the modules and wiring. It has also been reported that in some cases the drivers door panel is not available with the opening for the memory seat switch. In this case it may be necessary to cut the hole to make it accept the memory seat switch. Look for an outline on the backside of the panel that can be used as a template.

Solutions

IMPORTANT – Since this article was originally posted, we now have a solution for most affected Jeep Grand Cherokees. Fix ALL FOUR Jeep Handles at a reasonable price. See our product PN ZT100DLT .

Some Jeep owners that are fortunate enough to have factory warranty coverage, will come out of this unscathed – at least initially. Also, Jeep owners that have an extended warranty may have this problem covered as well. Getting this problem covered by an aftermarket warranty company will depend upon how the failure is written up and the guidelines of the policy. Some warranty companies are much easier to deal with than others. The failure should be written up as follows. Cause of failure: Interior door handle has stress cracked and is broken. There are no signs of abuse, impact damage or after market modifications. **Note that the interior door handle is serviceable only as an interior door panel assembly**Correction: Installed replacement interior door handle assembly to correct concern.

What some owners are doing.  Some Jeep owners that do not have any warranty are removing the door panels at the first sign of any spider cracking in the panel. Once removed, some are using super glue and/or two part epoxy repair resin to strengthen the area where the interior door handle is mounted in the panel. By doing this repair from the backside, the super glue or resin cannot be seen and the result may very well be a stronger than OE (Original Equipment) panel. Of course this works best when the pieces are all in place and there’s no chunks missing. Buying a used panel from a salvage yard is questionable since the panels/handles are very frail to begin with. The likelihood of a used panel cracking would be very high so for this reason I would not recommend usedIf you or someone you know has an experience to share please make a comment below. Latest news of any recall or aftermarket fixes will also be added when they are available.

I am experiencing this issue on my ’05 grand cherokee. 3 of 4 doors are broken and unusable. Dealer states $700 per door to repair. Have report to NHTSA.

On the drivers door, the plastic supporting the interior door handle has broken, leaving the handle unmounted and useless. I have maximum care upgrade extended warranty and the dealer says it may not be covered. Obviously, this is a safety hazard as it takes more time to egress the vehicle in an accident.

update 2 After contacting Jeep at 1-800-521-9922 and filing a case for a broken driver’s door handle/panel, they are stepping up and doing the right thing (initially, they declined my claim with my 100,000 mile 7 year maximum care upgrade extended warranty on my 80,000 + mile 2005 5.7 hemi grand cherokee, stating that it could be “wear and tear or possible abuse”). After I took a myriad of complaints from the NHTSA website http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/index.cfm – click “search selected type”, select year, 2005, select make JEEP, select model—GRAND CHEROKEE, click “Select this check box if you would like to see a full summary output on the search result page. Otherwise, the summary for each case will be available as a link”– to the dealer, and the dealer called Jeep, they are paying for the repair with a $50.00 copay. Unfortunately, the driver’s front door panel is on national back order. The more people who complain, the better the result will be.

Andrew, thanks for the information, I’m sure a lot of Jeep owners will be happy to find this out – except for the backorder part.

At this time I see 36 complaints related to interior door handles on NHTSA and this is only for 2005 Grand Cherokees. One such complaint is listed below.

    Make: JEEP
    Model: GRAND CHEROKEE

    Year: 2005
    Complaint Number: 10351394
    Summary:
TWO OF THE DOOR HANDLES ON MY 2005 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE HAVE BROKEN OFF AND ARE UNUSABLE. THE OTHER TWO ARE CRACKING AND I AM FEARFUL THAT THEY WILL BE BREAKING OFF SOON. THE HANDLES AND THE SUPPORTING DOOR FRAMES ARE ALL CRACKING IN THE SAME LOCATION AND THE HANDLES THEN FALL OFF. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN UNWILLING TO EVEN DISCUSS THE ISSUE. THE DEALER STATES IT IS $700 PER DOOR TO FIX. PARTS TO FIX THE DOOR HANDLES ARE UNAVAILABLE FOR SALE OUTSIDE THE DEALERSHIPS. DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUE OF BEING UNABLE TO EXIT THE BACK SEAT AREA FROM THE INSIDE, I AM UNABLE TO ALLOW ANYONE TO RIDE IN THE BACK SEATS AT THIS TIME. IF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR, THEY WOULD BE UNABLE TO EXIT THE CAR FROM THE INSIDE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS POSTED AS WELL AS A WEBSITE WHERE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ARE STATING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE WITH THEIR 2005 JEEP. THERE WAS NOT ANY OUTSIDE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT CAUSED THIS DEFECT. THE DEALER STATES IT IS “NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR”. THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE SAFETY HAZARD. I HOPE YOU WILL ADDRESS AS A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED BECAUSE THEY CANNOT GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE.

Add me to the list of unhappy Jeep owners. My 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited has three doors that are broken around the handle. The back seat door had the handle fall through the panel and is useless. The driver side is cracking and mssing a piece, and the passenger side panel has a missing piece around the handle. What kind of shoddy manufacturing is this? It definitely is a safety issue; I have kids in the backseat and they would not be able to escape during an accident.A recall is needed NOW.

  7. Jeff Hamilton :

    Date: November 29, 2010 @ 11:17 pm

Same here. The dealer actually broke my front passenger side inside handle while they were repairing the window motor and they replaced that one two years ago after a 90 day BATTLE , but now all of the other three are broken and hanging on by threads. It’s clearly a safety issue because and occupant may not be able to get out in the event of an accident.

Just found this site: Same story – 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 liter Hemi. Both front door panels – door handle areas are cracked and broken with pieces missing. All day searching for used door panels proved fruitless.

Recall is needed for this obvious manufacturing defect.

There is a product that I would try that could really strengthen the weak points. Of course ALL the pieces are needed. The Rapid Repair system can be used on the back of the panel when it is removed. Check out the product in the link below. It also has a video showing this product in action.

I have owned several jeeps and this the worst experience I’ve dealt with. I hvae a a 2005 grand cherokee limited with Hemi, v-8 top of the class jeep. Crazy thing is that we have used the back doors (from the inside – 50 times or less and both door handles are broken. The front passenger side door is also cracked. We have 2 kids 2 and under and have not used the doors from the inside in 2 years. Jeep will do nothing!!! pay $2100 for 3 doors. This may be the reason that I will never buy a jeep again!

“DITTO”!!! Very frustrating! I have a 2006 Limited and basically have to open the driver’s window to exit the vehicle! I used to love my Jeep, have recommended them to others and at one time was actually considering buying another. Not at $700 per door panel! STEP UP JEEP! The rest of the vehicle is great!

My 2005 in perfect condition, except ALL handle broken, my kid can no longer open back door. Where is the government when we need them?? Cost for my fix $2000, jeep putting half the bill.

I think maybe some people should report to BBB to have this item recalled.

After buying a vehicle you shouldn’t have to replace the doors! Even if the warranty is over it is the company’s problem to fix it! Maybe if more people report it maybe they will recall it!

  14. Myron James :

    Date: December 25, 2010 @ 1:33 pm

I own a 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited and by year 3 all 4 of my door handle broke the 2 rear ones are unusable. The dealer stated that my warrantee doesn’t cover the door handles and offered to replace the entire panels for a cost of $1400 plus labor. As for recall I think that this is a real item. The poorest design yet for a door handle. Sign me up for the petition

  15. Robert Craig :

    Date: January 1, 2011 @ 10:28 pm

Within the last 2 months, 3 of the 4 door handles on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited have broken. I have no wife or kids and the one and only time I had a passenger in the backseat the door handle broke when they were getting out. I picked up a friend from the airport yesterday and when they were opening the passegnger door to get out the handle and plastic broke and now the door won’t even open. The placstic around the driver’s door broke too. WTF?

  16. David R Boger Sr :

    Date: January 2, 2011 @ 1:29 pm

I own a 2005 Jeep Grand Cheerokee and have now experienced failure/breakage of 3 of 4 door hanldles including the drivers door. I have looked for replacement parts with no luck. I too believe this is a design flaw and Jeep needs to step up and fix this safety issue. What if a wreck occurs and you are trapped and cannot get out? Who is liable then? Jeep better step up or maybe we all find a law firm willing to bring a class action suit against their company!

  17. Chris M :

    Date: January 4, 2011 @ 1:26 pm

I have a 2006 jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 3/4 of the door handles cracked or broken and this has all happen within the last 4 months. both front doors are heavily cracked. As for the back doors i rarely use them but all of a sudden the driver side rear door completely broke all at once and is barely still usable.

  18. Lisa B. :

    Date: January 4, 2011 @ 2:53 pm

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Hemi and my door handles have been missing since last year. Currently I’m having an issue with passing a safety inspection due to not having door handles. Think about it, if your battery died and you were on a dessert stretch of road, how would you exit the car if you can’t use the auto windows? I only have 1 of the four handles left and the one is on the driver side door but it is hanging on by a thread. Seeing that I am the only driver of the car, i’ve been extremely cautious when using the remaining handle. I only have 78,000k miles on the car and the only passengers are me and my 5 year old. I called jeep September 2009 about the issue and they offered replacement of all panels for $1000 (which is a lot from my budget being a single parent).

Jeep needs to do a recall because I initiated the call to them when my then 4 year old daughter was locked in the car and could not reach down and open the door. I was loading groceries and my hand hit the auto lock button and all the doors locked. She could not unfasten her seat belt, climb to the front or open the door and it was hot outside too. The fire department and ploice showed up after I called a locksmith. The police opened the door with a flat steel bar because they were looking at a 4 year old locked in a car while it’s hot outside and no way to exit.

Jeep should do a recall for these door handles before someone seriously gets hurt!

  19. Robert B. :

    Date: January 5, 2011 @ 12:40 am

I too had a 2005 Jeep Grand and three of my door handles broke off within six months after I bought it used. I bought it in 2008. Only the driver’s side was left but it was cracked, too. I went to a Chysler Dealer and they said there were no recalls.

I email Jeep about my problem and told them about my safety concerns for my grandchildren. I too could not use this vehicle in a driving test to pass the drivers license. The inspector said I could not use this vehicle because if there was an accident she could not get out.

The answer from Jeep was that I bought a used vehicle, that is “As Is”.

Anyway I finally got rid of the Jeep by trading it in for a 2008 Town and Country Van. I paid a high price for this Van but just to get rid of the Jeep as a trade in. I bought the Van in 2010. I ran the Jeep close to two years with the broken handles. I bought the Van at a Chyrsler Dealership. I think Chysler knows about this problem because they took my Jeep as it was. I was given a good tradein deal even though most of the handles were broken.

In order to get out of the vehicle my passangers had to lower their windows and open the doors from the outside. By doing this, I was over working the door motors. I could here them squeeking as the windows were coming down and going up.

I told Jeep all this and they did not care at all. I will never, ever buy another Jeep again. By the way I did email NHTSA and they never said there was a problem or that the will be a recall.

I hope that with all these complaints Jeep issues a recall.

I have the same problem with my 2005 Grand Cherokee, 5.7L, All four plastic backing are broken now and the manufacturer has denied helping. They said I could go to a dealership and have them take pictures and send them in and that might help. I have also left a complaint with NHTSA and will join a class action law suit, This is def. a manufacterer default and clearly a safety issue. I have always loved jeep and never had a prb. with my 95. I was thinking about buying the 2011 but if they do not correct this problem I will never buy another Jeep in my life. They want 700 for the front panels and 415 for the back, 210 for labor, they want over $2600.00 to fix 4 little plastic SHELLS that they made cheaply. This is a class action law suit just waiting to happen. God forbid someone actually dies because they can’t get out of the vehicle after a wreck or if the power goes out.

My husband’s 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the hemi also had the poorly constucted door handle crack. He is the only driver of this vehicle and does not abuse it. I would dread using it for my grandchild after reading Lisa’s story.
Rolling down a window to exit your vehicle is not an option. This is a safety issue. A recall is definitey needed.
I contacted Jeep and they are not taking action for this serious problem.

  22. Sean S :

    Date: January 15, 2011 @ 11:27 am

I have the same problem on my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. The door handles started to show signs of cracking about 50,000 miles and are now completely broken out. Of course Jeep refused to address the issue because the vehicle is out of warranty. I have logged a complaint at NHTSA and would encourage all other owners to do the same. This should be a recall due to the safety implications.

  23. Michelle M :

I am a first time Jeep Owner. I have had my Jeep for over 2 years now. I had fell in love with my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Hemi. Until all the inside door panels have fallen apart. I have filed a claim with Jeep and they are saying it is wear and tear. LOL I have NEVER Owned a car that the door handles just crack and bust right off. I am tired of GLUEING MY CAR BACK TOGETHER. I have two kids that sit in the back and I am concerned for there safety. I would rather trade in my SUV then deal with a car company that is not responding to what is a very serious and common issue with this year and motor.

  24. Megan W :

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo and the front and passenger door handles are hanging by a thread. I googled the problem and found thousands of complaints so we contacted jeep concerning this situation. They said, “we have never heard of this problem before, sounds like regular wear and tear.” Well I’m sorry but I have never heard of any other car owners complaining of their interior doors falling apart! I think Jeep needs to take care of the safety of their customers rather than play dumb to a VERY apparent safety issue.

Brittney, no recall as of today’s date.

  27. Al Moon :

I have also had the two driver’s side panels crack and break. Luckily, one is still operational. I took it to my local dealer and paid $55 to be told that the product is not covered and it would cost over $1200 to repair as the extended warranty I bought doesn’t cover it either. I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA and am now waiting for Jeep/Chrysler/Fiat to do the right thing… voluntary or otherwise.

  28. Dany :

    Date: January 27, 2011 @ 2:35 pm

The four interior handles on my 2005 Grand Cherokee are broken. You’d think it was misuse but the plastic that holds the handles is fragile. I mean it brakes off so easily. The first handle was the drivers of course and then the passenger and then the rear ones. Jeep should take care of its customers and make sure they fix this. That is why most Americans are going to Japanese cars. They are more reliable. The plastic they use is not brittle like the one used in these Jeeps. We love our Jeeps and know that the recall will come in very soon. I will not buy any more Jeep nor Chrysler if nothing is done about this. I am out of warranty but the door handles are a manufacturing defect. The plastic is too fragile it chatters to pieces.
I hope Jeep takes the right steps to fix this.

  29. Frank Bowman :

I have a 2006 Jeep GC Limited and all 4 handles are broke. The back doors will not be able to open if involved in a crash. Cant believe there is no recall.

  30. dennisb - Auto Tool Sales :

    Date: February 3, 2011 @ 10:53 am

Farnk, still no recall! I was talking to a Jeep auto tech yesterday and he said the replacement panels are NOT any better. He said if he’s not very careful they can be broken during installation. The plastic is very brittle and if everything is not lined up correctly the panel may break. You cannot force this panel on during installation! So a word of caution: inspect new panels after installation at the repair shop before leaving to make sure they weren’t damaged when installed. Inspect the entire panel, not just in the interior handle area.

  31. Damien :

    Date: February 10, 2011 @ 12:41 am

I lhave had the same problem with my 2005 Grand cherokee limited. All four door handles have broke, with the rear passanger doors being the worst. They have become unusable and cause a major safety concern. Has anyone filed for a join class action lawsuit or started a petition?

  32. Sean S :

    Date: February 10, 2011 @ 11:22 am

I replaced the rear passenger side door panel because it was so bad you could fit your whole hand into the hole. Now the front passenger door is inoperable as well. I contacted my local dealership and they actually came clean that “all 2005 and 2006 Jeeps GC’s have this problem” and that they “see it all the time”. They told me to call Jeep customer service and that they will help with the repair financially, and that they have seen Jeep do this mutliple times. I called the customer service department again even though I was rejected on this a year ago….we’ll see.

  33. Sean S :

    Date: February 10, 2011 @ 11:28 am

Oh by the way…..if you have to repair the doors price it out with different dealerships. Many dealerships are charging way to much in labor cost. A reliable and user friendly dealership near my old house only charged me the cost of the door plus $30 for install. I called three other dealerships around my new work and home location and they want to charge $100 to $150 in labor….Crazy!

  34. Sean S :

    Date: February 11, 2011 @ 1:49 pm

Well….spoke with Jeep Customer Service again. They denied my claim again so I asked to speak with a supervisor. I was told that they would call back within an hour. I received a call back and the supervisor disconnected the call immediately after the introduction…..what a joke. Unfortunately, this will not only be the last Jeep I buy but I’m done with all American car companies.

We bought a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland in 2007. We drive a lot so our warranty was up in 2 years. In 2010 the back door handle on the driver’s side broke free of the plastic and now is unusable. We have no other option than to continue driving our children around in this, as no one can even get the parts to repair this. All our door handles are now cracking and beginning to fall out. Soon, this vehicle that cost us nearly $40,000.00, will be fun to open, as we will all have open our windows to get out! My wife and I do not have the money to fix this right now even if we could get the parts! That means we also cannot afford to buy a new vehicle. What can we do?

    Jeff,

It amazes me that this not a recall. It is obviously a problem with inferior plastic (or composite material). There’s basically two different designs of these door panels. One has a round shape around the door handle and one has a rectangle recess around the handle. BOTH break equally as often because of the brittle plastic material. I held a piece of broken material from a Jeep Commander (yesterday at a local repair shop) and to my surprise it broke very easily. It reminded me of breaking a Twix candy bar.

We are keeping an eye out for any news of a class action regarding this, so check back soon. We’ll post here in the comments section any legal info or lawyers which may be starting a list of clients.

  40. David Larch :

Same old story, 2005 Limited has all door handles hanging on by a thread, the rear driver side completely broken off now. Chrysler will never get my business again, you can rely on that. Nothing is gonna get done until unfortunately, several people/children die when they are trapped in the vehicle during a fire, or submerged under water. That’s the only time this sorry government of ours will do anything to the mega car businesses anymore. I just hope and pray it is not my family or friends who are the sacrificial lambs….

I am having the same issues right now with our 2005 Jeep GC Hemi. Chrysler Jeep will pay for approx. $400 of the $1400+ that it will cost to fix the 3 doors. One won’t even open from the inside but yet this is not considered a safety issue to them. I am ready to trade my Jeep in and never buy another Chrysler Jeep Product again.

Ditto again…..The door handles are breaking on my 2005 Jeep and I called the Chrysler hot line, and they advise that there are no recalls to date, but maybe the door can be fixed by just purchasing the handle by itself…..My mechanic says the the entire door panel has to be purchased at $500-$700. I guess the thing to do is look for someone to run into your car on the spot that needs repair….but what are the odds of that happening?

  47. Julie :

    Date: March 16, 2011 @ 11:17 am

I just heard back from Chrysler after fighting to have just 1 of my 3 doors fixed. I settled for just the one that wouldn’t open(the back passenger handle will probably fall off next week and the front passenger is just cracked.)They will fix the one door for $100. First they said just the handle but I told them-what’s gonna hold it in place? So they went back to the dealsership and finally figured out I need the door panel too.(Took them 3 conversations to figure that one out). Now it’s on national backorder. Which is what I figured.

Like the rest of you, I am having the same issues right now with our 2005 Jeep GC Hemi. The Chrysler Jeep dealer (after contacting his Regional Manager) will pay for approx. half of the $2000+ that it will cost to fix the 3 doors. The front passenger door won’t even open from the inside yet they still don’t consider this a safety issue. I am looking into filing a Class Action Law Suit…

  49. Helga Maynard :

    Date: March 23, 2011 @ 12:42 pm

Like all of you, I have the same issue with my Cheep Cherokee hemi 2005. Three of my door handles are completly broken off and one is just hanging and will fall off soon, which leaves me with a $38,000 car with doors that are inoperable in case of an accident. This is definatly a safety issue and should be recalled.

  50. Austin Stallings :

    Date: March 24, 2011 @ 4:38 pm

Obviously I am posting here because the same happened to my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo…it actually happened about a year ago to my back right door, which is completely useless now because the handle fell all the way through. And it recently happened to my passenger door (driver door handle is still good)…and after reading a few of the comments I am sort of confused and am not sure what my first step should be (i was just not going to do anything but now after seeing it happens to this many people i want it fixed)

Anyone who has been through this with Jeep please let me know what my first step should be and how it worked out for you

    Thanks,
    Austin

I just purchased a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same problem on the drivers side. I wish I would have had more information on this prior to. The dealer is trying to make this right but it is a safety issue has not being operable to open the door. This should be a recall. Shame on Jeep. This is my first US purchase since 1985 and now I am understanding why I always buy foreign vehicles. Stand up and do a recall and fix this very unsafe problem

  52. Janice Palanjian :

Purchased a 2006 Jeep GC Limited 4×4 as a “safety upgrade” from my 1993 cherokee for my daughter…how ironic???!! I also purchased a 7 year/85K extended service plan. Figured I was covered…not so!!! I have one handle off on the passenger rear, and passenger front is only a matter of time. Filed a report with NHTSA. Jeep offered to pay for half of the cost, but frankly, that’s not acceptable. This type of problem shouldn’t be happening in such an expensive vehicle. These vehicles are a death trap, plain and simple. I love how some of the reps blame it on “wear and tear”…my 93 cherokee has been thru heck and back along with SEVERAL military moves…all door handles intact! Seems this is going to require a class action suit since the feckless reps at Jeep refuse to address this for the absolute safety hazard that it is! Step up Chrysler and do the right thing before it’s too late for some dismayed customer locked inside their own vehicle!

We’ve got it, 2005 JGC, 3 doors can see the crack starting on front passenger door, it’s just a matter of time. One of rear doors can’t even open from inside.. That doesn’t give me warm and fuzzy with my kids sitting in back seat. Calling Jeep to start that fun.

  55. Kirsten :

    DITTO…DITTO…DITTO!!!
I sound like a broken record, but my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is in the same shape. My petite, four-year-old niece broke the first one. Soon after this incident, the other back door was broken. Now, both front doors are barely working… the handles are basically hanging on by a thread. Before long, I won’t be able to leave the inside of my vehicle without opening a window and reaching outside to open my door. I am a single, struggling mom… I don’t have an extra $2000 to spend on a manufacturer’s defect! Ahhhhhh!

  56. Emanuel :

    Date: March 31, 2011 @ 4:23 pm

my 05 limited grand cherokee has the same problem, both the front door panels are cracked drivers side is completely not working, must open the window to get out. Jeep said they wouldnt cover because i was out of warranty and because i am not the original order, Im only 17 so i can not really start a class action suit. Please some do this and i will be on that bandwagon in a heart beat. I love jeeps and had to beg my parents to get one. Now i know why they say jeeps are sh__t. I loved my jeep till i heard that I have to pay 700 dollars plus labor cost for a freekin door panel. That is what you call a scam

  57. tino r :

2005 jeep grand cherokee same problem 3 cracked door panels. I removed 1 cracked door panel about 2 years ago thinking I broke it and replaced it with new. I noticed the plastic was very cheap. I realized now it was defective, the other panels need replacing but jeep needs to replace them because they are defective, but they said it was “wear and tear”.

  58. Jersy :

    Date: April 4, 2011 @ 5:49 pm

Wow. Its amazing how many people are having this exact problem and yet Chrysler has yet to do a recall. I too own a 2005 Grand Cherokee and have 3 broken handles. Called Chrysler and they told me I have to take it to my local dealer and have them “diagnose” the problem before they file my complaint. Service manager said that Chrysler is aware of the problem and that they have been fixing it, wether at no cost or copay he didn’t say but they obviously know that theres something wrong. Called Chrysler back and they escalated my claim to claims manager and are hoping to hear from them tomorrow. I definitely wont go down without a fight and do not plan on spending a single penny to fix something thats defective. Hopefully it doesn’t have to go class action suit route. Fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone going through this and I’ll make sure to post back any new info. If it has to go to class action ill be sure to post that as well and see how many people we can get to join and get the quality product we expected when we spent our hard earned money on the Jeep name

  59. J Garrity :

    Date: April 7, 2011 @ 11:20 am

My complaint is exactly as stated in most of the 103 comments previously posted. All 4 door panels on my 2005 jeep grand cheerokee limited are cracked or in the front doors completely broken out making the door handles inoperable. Hoping that chrysler wakes up and handles this ongoing nightmare. The saftey factor here is alarming and I hope they don’t wait until this obvious defect causes someones death due to the inability to exit the car using the inside handles.

  60. Jersy :

    Date: April 8, 2011 @ 4:37 pm

So after contacting Chrysler and speaking with a manager they said that it’s not a recall and won’t be providing any financial assistance or replacing any broken handles since my vehicle isn’t covered under warranty. Even after the threat of legal action they still declined any help. Guess the next step is to find an attorney that will do a class action lawsuit so hopefully they’ll repair our vehicles. Will keep posted

  61. R. Savage :

    Date: April 11, 2011 @ 1:48 pm

Add the Savage family to the list of those outraged by the defective workmanship of Jeep. Same problem in our 2006 Commander limited of broken plastic door handle. Local hometown dealership didn’t even mention this was a common problem, but was more than willing to repair at $700.00 per door. Why replace at this cost when dealership is going to replace with same defective panel? Talk about a safety issue come on! Trail rated american toughness my eye! Far cry from glory days of Jeep. Last purchase of a Chrysler product for this customer.

I recommend that you DO NOT call the 800 number listed in “ghostsailor”‘s e-mail regarding the door handle issue on Jeep Grand Cherokees. This appears to be some kind of pay-service number – not an official CHRYSLER number. The official number – and the one that I was able to file a complaint at is 1-800-CHRYSLER (1-800-247-9753).

I have an ’06 Jeep, the area around the passenger side handle has imploded. That door saw almost no use. When I took the panel off, I touched one of the plastic retainers that had no structural damage and it BROKE. I then placed the weight of my finger on another one of the cable retainers and it also BROKE. Recall please.

I have a 2005 Jeep GC with the exact same problems. The Driver Side Interior Door Handle has now been broken for over a year and the Rear Driver’s Side Interior Door Handle is also broken now. We are super careful with the other 2 to make sure they don’t break as well. Same story…went to the dealer and they quoted me $400+ per door panel without installation. I called Jeep and they said it was likely normal wear and tear. BS! Last Jeep I will ever buy!

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I just hit 50,000 miles, and it is sporadic at best that I have passengers in the back. I have kept my vehicle in immaculate condition. However, both of my rear door handles are completely broken. I have to open the doors from the outside. My front two door handles are cracked with pieces missing but still operational for the moment, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time. There definitely needs to be a recall!!! If I were in an accident and rendered unconscious my rear passengers have no way of exiting the vehicle. I have contacted the corporate office, and they have offered me some goodwill assistance. But, I will still have to pay $800 ($200/door) to have all four door panels replaced. I don’t feel I should have to pay for an inferior product that is a safety hazard.

  72. Kim :

    Date: May 12, 2011 @ 4:04 pm

I had the same issue with my 2005 Grand Cherokee Ltd. I got absolutely nowhere with the dealership or Chrysler. I reported it to the NHTSA as well. ALL FOUR doors were affected. When it got to the point that my son had to roll down the rear window and use the outside door handle to exit the vehicle, I decided I was done. I traded it in and will NEVER buy another Chrysler product due to their lack of concern/action regarding this issue. Does someone have to die due to this for Chrysler to start making this right???

  73. Elisa :

    Date: May 13, 2011 @ 9:16 am

Same here. WE have 3 out of 4 doors with broken handles. You can’t find replacements. I want to trade but what kind of trade in value are the jeeps going to bring with 3 broken door handles. This is an outrage and Jeep should be held accountable for faulty manufacturing.

I have all 4 door panels of my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee (5.7 Hemi) broken off and inoperable. This is a Huge safety issue. I have seen 160 cases reported to NHTSA and have been talking with Chrysler/Jeep case managers and supervisors to no resolve. A re-call is needed. The repair kit will work but we should not have to be paying for the parts and labor.

  76. dennisb - Auto Tool Sales :

    Date: May 19, 2011 @ 2:18 pm

Agreed. It seems as though the best anyone has been able to get from Jeep is 1/2 off the repair. Half off of $2800 is still $1400 if you need all four. Are the replacement door panels using the same faulty material? Not sure, but for my money I would go with the repair kit for a fraction of the cost and no headache arguing with the dealership. The choice is yours. Good Luck

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and all four of my door handles are broke. We have bought 10 vehicles from the Dodge Jeep dealership in our hometown. When we contacted them we were told all they could do is pay half which would leave me paying $800.

I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited and the rear passenger inside door handle broke off after being cracked for a while. The door now cannot be opened from the inside, which I consider a safety hazzard for the rear occupant if there was a fire or accident.

Even with my extended warranty through Chrysler they claimed it was not covered and wanted to charge me $800 to repair the handle.

Needless to say the handle is still broken.

Just want to drop a positive comment, and highly recommend, the fix you see on DenLorsTools.com using PN ZT100DLT. Zach and team really came through for all of us that are stuck with Chrysler’s poor resin selection for the door handle area. Just completed an install of this product after finishing to match and it is a perfect solution! Much stronger than the OEM and you honestly can not tell it was even repaired. Thanks Zach for taking the time to put this fix on the market!!

  81. Mark :

    Date: June 4, 2011 @ 4:35 pm

Just got back from my dealership and same answer as the previous 160 plus jeep owners; $2000 to replace all 4 panels that will break again!
Is jeep waiting for someone to die because they wasn’t able to get out during an accident? I really like my 2006 grand cherokee but 2 grand to replace something that is an obvious manufacture defect is ridiculous.

  82. lucy :

    Date: June 17, 2011 @ 9:08 am

What will it take for Jeep to recall these door panels, Has anyone used the $200 kit to repair it. How come the Better Business Bureau does not step in or whoever the government has to recall items. This is definately a safety issue, I have two handles on the back seat that are completely broken off and the two in the front that are cracked and ready to break off.

  83. Tony :

Tony, 2005, 2006 & 2007 are the ones that are plagued with this problem. I wouldn’t let this stop you though. With the handle repair kit we sell, all 4 doors can be cured for a couple of hundred dollars.

i have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee with 1 broken door panel at the moment. I went to a jeep dealership in Florida and they stated since you have to replace the entire door panel it would cost $550 (not inlcuding labor). They suggested I look at a salvage yard but no luck! unreal….

  87. dennisb - Auto Tool Sales :

    Date: June 30, 2011 @ 12:56 pm

Brianna, I would NEVER recommend a used panel for this application. They are crumbling, what sense would it make to buy a used one that’s been sitting around in a junkyard? We sell the NEW repair kits that FIX the problem rather than just buy a little time. Our’s are made of durable material that will last. Click the image below, to see the product. Why not be done with this problem for good? Thanks for taking the time to comment.

We checked the website mentioned for a repair kit but the are currently out and we left our contact info for them to get back with us. I hope this works we really don’t want to have to replace all three doors at the price quoted from the Jeep dealership. Maybe they will issue a recall soon.

  90. Lindsey :

    Date: July 25, 2011 @ 7:05 pm

My 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited all 4 handles are broken. They have been cracked for a while, but I thought nothing of it bc the doors were still functional- until the back passenger handle completely broke off this past weekend. Now the door is inoperable from the inside. I am very upset about this issue. Has a recall been made? How do I even go about having this fixed? Call Jeep and start the hassle/headache to fix something that should not be damaged? This sounds like LOADS of fun… joy..

David, thanks for taking the time to comment. There may never be a recall, the good news is there is a fix for this problem without going through all the hassle of fooling with the dealership. We have the ZT100 and ZT101 in stock and ready to ship. Certainly a better option. Good Luck.

  94. TS :

    Date: July 26, 2011 @ 2:37 pm

We too have the same issue with our 2006 Grand Cherokee Limited. We will certainly get the repair kit. However, I noticed today the handle itself on one of the doors is broken as well. How do we go about repairing it?

  95. dennisb - Auto Tool Sales :

    Date: July 26, 2011 @ 2:53 pm

TS, this is the first handle that I’ve heard of that has broken. The housing is usually the problem and NOT the handle itself. I would check a salvage yard for the handle availability. It may take some leg work though, because salvage yards are not likely to inventory the door panel assemblies because they are more than likely to have cracked housings. Good luck.

  96. Brandon Austin :

    Date: July 26, 2011 @ 5:51 pm

I have a Jeep just like this and mine are finally doing it. I have already bought one at $749. Right Front side.
And now my Drivers side is doing the same thing… I seriously have to roll my window down and open the truck from the outside. This needs a recall bad. Jeep needs to get in gear and help these people out if they want us to continue having service through them. I love Jeep and would seriously consider still buying from Jeep but if this doesn’t get fixed, “I WILL NOT BUY FROM THEM EVER AGAIN” I like the new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is out now and was planning on getting this Vehicle but now with Jeep not wanting to fix this simple problem I won’t buy from them again. And if I have kids, family or friends in this truck and have a wreck. They wouldn’t be able to get out if it rolled over. It needs to become a recall sooner or later…

  97. Aaron Chovanec :

    Date: July 30, 2011 @ 10:43 pm

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, silver 2WD. all my interior handles are broken. If anyone of you have any advice on what I should do please comment. This is ridiculous my parents are wanting to file a class action law suit.

  98. dennisb - Auto Tool Sales :

    Date: July 31, 2011 @ 7:45 am

Aaron, the time it would take for a class action lawsuit could be rather lengthy. In the meantime you will have broken handles to deal with. Even if the dealer would replace all 4 panels for “free” (which is very unlikely) you may be reponsible for the sales tax. One of our recent customer’s had this situation. After 4-5 months of going back and forth with Jeep, complaining and threatening never to purchase another Jeep. They agreed to replace ALL the panels. They only had th pay sales tax. Tax on $2800 depending on the tax rate in your state can range from around $175 to $275.

    Here’s what I would do.
I would purchase the fully warranteed and stronger design Zach Thrasher ZT100 (Gray) or ZT101 (Tan) for $199 and have doors that work NOW. I would not argue with the dealer for months and months with no garuantee that they will do anything. Besides, at the dealer all you would end up with, if you were successful, is weak door handles AGAIN.
Click on the image below – end the madness!

Dennis, one my passenger door the handle it self snapped off. and all my other doors are busted up. It makes me sick. I called Jeep and they said that they arent going to pay for them to be fixed and i got an estimate to get new panels and it is right at $2000. Now who can pay for that out of pocket in this economy? because i sure cant. If i was to buy your product how am i going to get them installed? and how am i going to get the door handle that broke off fixed?

  100. dennisb - Auto Tool Sales :

    Date: August 21, 2011 @ 7:10 pm

Aaron, I’m not sure what you mean buy “the handle itself snapped off”. If the lever is ok but just separated from the pivot point the kit we sell should work out well. You just reuse the levers. It would take extreme abuse to break a lever. If however your lever is broken, then you may be able to find one at a salvage yard. Most independent repair shops will be willing to take this job on if you are uncomfortable with the task. Good Luck.

It takes five minutes…you can even copy and paste wording I used and modify for your case (it should get some attention!): “ALL 4 INTERIOR DOOR OPENING HANDLES BREAKING/FAILING: 1 REAR DOOR TOTALLY INOPERABLE. ***THIS IS A DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE – IF HANDLES BREAK OR ARE INOPERABLE IN CERTAIN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, PASSENGERS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE, CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH!*** MANUFACTURER CHARGE TO REPLACE/REPAIR HANDLES IS PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE: IN MY CASE, THE COST OF EIGHT (8) MONTHLY CAR PAYMENTS! MANUFACTURER SAFETY RECALL WARRANTED!”

I got the same problem with my 2005. I am going to buy a kit from you after all. I got 4 used panels from a 2006 jeep on ebay paid 500$ for them. I then put one on my passenger and it cracked within a month. I then got jeep to pay the bill after complaining with them on the phone for a while. Used panels will not work or last. I hope your product is stronger and longer lasting.. I just bought a part on ebay from part pros. They have no parts that come with it and no instructions. I told them I will be going to you for my parts! One thing i like about there kit is it comes with a handle but i know yours has great reviews.. Dennis I am glad I found this info.. Thanks

I have jeep 2005 and I have the same problem with all four door handles broken.
Here in United Arab Emirates they asked $3000 dollars to repair.

Rami, that is even higher than in the United States. With no recall in sight, we are still helping many Jeep owners with the Zach Thrasher ZT100 and ZT101′s to fix the problem for just a small fraction of that. Good Luck.

I also have an jgc 2006 back door handle crack I went to the dealership here in phoenix all I need is that part they stated I would need to replace the whole door panel because its all connected.

Martin, that’s the reason the ZT100 or ZT101′s that we sell makes sense and save money! Why replace the entire door panel when all that is needed is the handle housings?

  111. martin :

yes it does make sense, my concern is that handle housing is stuck on with whole door pannel hoim im i going to remove just that part?

3 of the four door handles on my Daughters 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee have broken. How many people have to complain before Jeep actually does something about this?

John, I understand the frustration. Complaining may… or may not help in the long term. That’s why we are happy to offer a product that fixes the problem NOW – rather than just providing a blog/medium for venting and complaining. For $199, the problem can be put to rest. See our ZT100 and ZT101 for more information. Good Luck.

can you simply buy one of the 4 internal handles instead of all 4 for $199. I only need one and thus a waist of money for buying all 4 for $199.
    thanks, curtis

Curtis, at this time the kits are sold as a set of four. I understand your concern, however a real waist of money would be – purchasing “one” panel (same faulty plastic?) from the dealer for 3 times the cost of a kit that will repair all four. Besides, if one fails how far could the other’s be from breaking too?

I have three of four door handles doing the same thing. How can jepp get away with this? My children almost got run over becasue of this issue. They tried getting out of the back seat road side instead of curb side when it broke. I was able to get to them before anything happend.

Its great there is a product that is only $199 instead of a $2100 but why in the world do these little plastic things cost $199 for four. They should be more like $10 each. I am sure they cost about $1 to make each. Considering how many are in this forum alone there maybe thousands that need this product.

NHTSA should step up and do what is obviously within their responciibilty.

Development, copryrighting, labor to produce and marketing actually costs more than what most people think. If it were a simple process of taking a piece of plastic, shaping it and selling it, there would be more competition. I personally think the manufacturer (Zach Thrasher) has been very fair in pricing a solution for this problem. They even warranty the product. Something that the BIG car manufacturer has failed to do. BTW, there may be a cost increase in the near future but we will keep the final price as low as possible for as long as we can.

I have the exact same problem 2005 Grand Cherokee Hemi – 4 broken panels (one I repaired at a cost of $700) Does anyone know of a class action that I may join or other effective method as Jeep says that they will “study” my complaint

Well, add another victim to this weak door panel fiasco. My issue is more with the dealer that sold me the 2005 Used Jeep Grand Cherokee (Arrigo Chrysler Dodge Chrysler Sawgrass. Fl)….they most certainly would have known about this during their inspection, cleaning, detailing etc. The salesman never mentioned a word and of course the deal was structured “AS IS”…. I never expected this from a large dealership therefore didn’t bother to get very detailed in my pre-purchase inspection!. I will give Arrigo Dodge Chrysler in Sawgrass (Broward County Fl) an opportunity to make things right and will post the outcome.

Could it be that there are decent car dealers out there? – Received call from Dealership co-owner John Arrigo of Arrigo Dodge Chrysler Sawgrass responding to my complaint letter re: door panels. He stated that he will make things right even though it was a a used car “as-is” sale. Further stated that he will contact Chrysler about this issue. I will continue to update.

My dealer Arrigo Dodge Chrysler Sawgrass (Fl), may have solved my particular problem but today I filed a defective part complaint re: door panels to safecar.gov . Suggest anyone with same problem do the same. Only took 5 minutes. You will need the VIN #. Perhaps this will force Chrysler to issue a re-call.

As soon as I get the Jeep back (hopefully with new door panels), I plan on removing the new door panels and re-enforcing the weak molded section with fiberglass. Just in case!

AP, if you are lucky the dealer will get the upgraded housings (Zach Thrasher ZT100 or ZT101) and then there won’t be any need to reinforce the OE (Original Equipment) weak design. Problem Solved! Good Luck.
